How We Match: Our Yorkshire Terrier Rehoming Process

YorkieSA Private Rehoming connects Yorkshire Terrier owners with vetted, approved adopting families across South Africa through a structured home-to-home process. Handled by the experienced SA Yorkie Rescue (SAYR) adoptions team, our matching process keeps your Yorkie at home while families are screened, verified home checks, and direct placement.

The philosophy: Careful matching over speed

Matching is about fit, not speed. A Yorkie placed in the wrong home often has to move again, so the team takes time to find the right family.

Our service focuses entirely on compatibility. We evaluate each dog's unique personality, energy level, medical needs, and handling quirks, matching them specifically with a household prepared to meet those requirements.

Throughout this period, your Yorkie stays safely in their normal routine at home. In an emergency the team may look for a suitable foster home, but one can't be guaranteed.

The four-stage matching process

Stage 1: Owner intake and information review

The process begins when you complete our comprehensive online request form. You share essential details: - Dog's age, sex, sterilisation status, and microchip number. - Complete veterinary card history, chronic medications, and dietary needs. - Daily behavioural notes regarding children, visitors, cats, and other dogs. - Reasons for rehoming and your required placement timeline.

The SAYR adoptions team reviews your submission. The team usually replies within an hour during business hours.

Stage 2: Creating the private dog profile

The team compiles an anonymous profile for matching. This profile highlights your dog's character, daily routine, and specific household requirements.

Only the adoptions team sees your request. Your contact details are not passed to anyone until an adopter has been approved and has completed the paperwork. Public profiles show town and province only, never your name or address.

Stage 3: Adopter screening and environmental verification

The adoptions team checks each prospective family against what your Yorkie needs: - Home video check: walls, fences and gates, including small gaps a Yorkie could squeeze through. The team may ask follow-up questions or for more footage. Photos or an in-person visit may also be used, depending on the case. - Pool safety: a suitable barrier, cover or net wherever there is a pool. - Indoor sleeping: where the dog will sleep at night. - Household fit: children's ages and any other pets, assessed against your Yorkie's personality and needs. - Vet reference: asked for where relevant.

Stage 4: Adoption documentation and calm handover

Once an applicant satisfies all vetting checks, the formal adoption documentation is completed: - The adopter signs SAYR's adoption contract, which includes return conditions. - The adoption fee is discussed privately. The adoption fee is never published. The team discusses it with adopters personally. - A calm handover is arranged, moving the dog directly from your home to the new family's care.

What happens after placement?

A responsible placement service provides continuity: - Updates to you: Where appropriate, messages or photos may be shared with you after placement, but this isn't guaranteed for every Yorkie. - If a placement doesn't work out: The adopter must contact SAYR, and the team arranges the next placement. Foster care is used where needed and available. The Yorkie does not automatically return to the original owner. - Settling support: We provide adopters with practical settling advice.
