Privacy notice

This notice explains what personal information yorkiesa.com collects, why, who sees it, and how to ask us to see, correct or delete it. It follows the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

Who is responsible for your information

yorkiesa.com is run by SA Yorkie Rescue (SAYR), which also runs yorkierescue.co.za and sayr.co.za. SA Yorkie Rescue is a sole proprietorship and is the responsible party for personal information collected on this site.

What we collect

If you send a private rehoming request, we collect what you enter on the form:

  • your first name, mobile number, email address, suburb or town, and province
  • whether you are filling it in for someone else, and your relationship to them
  • your reason for rehoming and any deadline. If the reason is ill health, this is health information about you or a family member, which POPIA treats as special personal information
  • details about your Yorkie, and how you heard about us

The team will also ask for photos of your Yorkie on WhatsApp, and keeps the messages, emails and calls you have with them.

When you browse the site, Google Analytics uses cookies to record which pages are viewed, the device and browser used, and approximate location (for example the city). We use this only to see which pages help people. We do not sell personal information or use it for advertising profiles.

Why we use it

  • to contact you about your request and help rehome your Yorkie
  • to prepare an anonymous profile of your Yorkie and match them with a suitable, approved adopter
  • to keep a record of the placement and the adoption contract
  • to understand how the site is used and improve it

We process your request because you asked us to and gave consent on the form. For health information, we rely on your consent. You can withdraw consent at any time by contacting the Information Officer. If you do, we may not be able to continue helping rehome your Yorkie.

Who sees it

  • The SAYR adoptions team. Only the team sees your request.
  • The approved adopter. Your contact details are not passed to anyone until an adopter has been approved and has completed the paperwork. They are shared after that so the handover can be arranged.
  • The public. Your Yorkie's profile shows the dog's details and photos, and the town and province only, never your name, address or phone number.
  • Service providers that store or process information for us: Google (Gmail, Google Sheets, Apps Script and Google Analytics), Cloudflare (website hosting) and Meta (WhatsApp). They may use it only to provide their service to us.
  • Anyone we are required to share it with by law.

Information stored outside South Africa

Google, Cloudflare and Meta may store information on servers outside South Africa. We use providers that are bound by data protection laws or agreements that give protection comparable to POPIA.

How long we keep it

We keep rehoming requests, messages and adoption records for up to 5 years after your Yorkie is placed or the request is closed, then delete them. Google Analytics data is kept for 14 months.

Keeping it safe

Requests are stored in a Google account that only the adoptions team can access. No system is completely secure. If we believe your personal information has been accessed without permission, we will tell you and the Information Regulator as POPIA requires.

Your rights

You can ask us to:

  • confirm whether we hold personal information about you, and give you a copy
  • correct information that is wrong or out of date
  • delete your information
  • stop using your information, or withdraw your consent

Email the Information Officer at angelique@yorkierescue.co.za. We may need to confirm who you are first, and we aim to reply within 30 days.

Cookies

yorkiesa.com uses Google Analytics cookies to measure visits. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and the site will still work.

Children

The rehoming request form is for adults. If you are under 18, please ask a parent or guardian to contact us.

Complaints

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, please contact the Information Officer first at angelique@yorkierescue.co.za. You also have the right to complain to the Information Regulator: inforegulator.org.za, enquiries@inforegulator.org.za, 010 023 5200.

Changes to this notice

If we change this notice, we will update it on this page and change the effective date at the top.
